Fysh is well mannered, he really is as awesome as he sounds here, we never dealt with the terrible two's or the threenager ages and he only ever threw a tantrum in the shop once but eight has brought on a kid I don't know so well. He's still very polite, clever, grateful for even the small things and quirky but in between that I'm seeing things like talking back and the more recent - LYING TO ME! I mean it's small things, like telling me how the food...

This is a more controversial post than I'm generally used to writing and I know there will probably be people who have nasty things to say but it's constantly on my mind so fuck it...

I'm trying to think why we haven't done this one before, you know with the whole unicorns and mermaids obsession in this house and what not. Ooh mermaids will have to be another one hahaha. Unicorns are mythical of course, but that doesn't mean they haven't had a large impact on history. Also don't tell my child they aren't real because he will argue it until you believe him. I'm okay with that. Rather unicorns than bloody Stampylongnose or whatever he's called. Man that guy's voice grates me. Thought I'd...

We're on week two of this whole "being more active" thing and last week showed a few cm's down which is of course a bonus and fantastic motivation to keep at it. It really does help getting a few people in on it with you to help motivate each other. Sometimes we talk more kak than anything else but we always check in and see how the water intake is going, share interesting recipes and keep each other's spirits up when it's been a particularly tough day. Because...

Often Fysh asks about what would happen if there was an apocalypse, be it by zombie or something else thanks to all the dystopian themed movies (also, it probably doesn't help that my paranoid overly prepared stepfather has a garage full of supplies for when if it happens). There are a lot of things that I've learned over the years thanks to either a parent or a stranger that school never taught me but that's come in REALLY handy and has impressed someone / saved my life and would definitely come...

We were playing with a bracelet I got from Jill from JamTarts a few years back, the ends link together with magnets and Fysh was testing their strength. Trying to see through how much paper they would stick, watching them pull towards each other. Then I found one with that pushes the other away and he was fascinated. I think we forget how small things like that are actually really delightful and  interesting and that just playing with them teaches us about physics. That's the one thing I have...

We live not too far away from a school, actually we're about 12 houses away, so there are kids that come past us daily. Fysh was outside playing with the woof and got chatting to some of the kids. One came to visit and they ended up chatting for a while and then watching something on the tablet till I asked G to please go home in case his mother was worried where he is and bring her details so I can let her know next time. Today him...

The Person is the most damn patient and quietly persistent person I have ever met. He's done so many things to help out and for a long time I resisted because "my life is fine stop trying to change it" but here and there I started giving in. And it's funny how things happen like that, you start changing one small thing here and there and the ripple effect is tremendous. I started forcing myself to disconnect and go to bed earlier than usual, whether or not I had...

I have tried growing plants for ages and yet somehow I always end up killing them. Fysh seems good at it though and his little birthday seeds are growing fabulously. Soon we'll have a whole herb garden and spinach and carrots. He wants to try strawberries and tomatoes as well so I'll be getting him seeds next week. Succulents though, these I seem to be able to keep alive and grow pretty well! Probably because they only need to be watered once a week and thrive on sun and...

When Fysh held up a suurtjie for me to nosh on yesterday and asked what they are called in English I honestly had no idea. None whatsoever. Blank page there. We spent summers on the West Coast with my grandparents so I've grown up with suurtjies, picking them and rinsing them off then pulling all the faces as you get that sour taste when you chew on them. They're gorgeous and tasty but what else? They're a weed, I know that. They're the one mom always said it's okay...
