Last week I mentioned that the Bay Harbor Market in Hout Bay now has something called Kids Saturday's where you can browse the stalls while the kids are entertained by the activity of the day, the face painter and jojo the clown. So we took a road trip out to the republic of Hout Bay and had a look for ourselves at what the fuss is all about. Today was Pizza making! There were rollers and dough with all sorts of toppings set up for the kids so they...

It's summer which means those crappy little flying creepy crawlies are coming out, or I should rather say coming IN. And of course with the drought it's even worse as they're trying to find any food source and water available to them. Spiders I can deal with, they at least eat the mosquitoes that come with living near a vlei. But roaches? I just can't deal. They make me feel dirty and itchy and I constantly feel like they're crawling on me the moment I see one even...

We were invited by the V&A Waterfront to a mom and kid day and man oh man did we have a fantastic day! I'm actually not sure which of us had more fun to be honest, but I'm sure Fysh will argue that it was him (and my feet might agree as they are complaining about trying to keep up with him!) Our day started with lunch at Col'Caccio, I was a little worried because being a vegan eating at any restaurant can be tricky and usually I end...

My cousin was married in Mykonos on a windy but perfect Saturday to her long time person and I got to be there. It was my first wedding where I wasn't the photographer and I struggled to get through the beginning without having something to concentrate on but my cousin looked gorgeous and she radiated happiness which is what counts the most out of everything. She was all smiles and laughter. She did all the decor herself and you could see the effort she put in, it was really...

- GIVEAWAY CLOSED -   Hout Bay Saturday market has launched a new kids program that they've dubbed ‘Young Saturdays’ - which will keep the kids entertained while we relax and browse all the stalls trying not to buy all the amazing things. Each Saturday will see a face painter and clown, balloon animals and art (all free of charge!) and every Saturday will have a different theme and form of entertainment. This Saturday, the kids will be entertained by magician Jacques le Sueur. Other activities this September in case you can't...

When I'm down I tend to go for comfort foods, things like a pot of pasta, chips, you know what I'm talking about right? Today I wanted that. I wanted to order in pizza and coke, I wanted to just sit and eat and be alone. But I always hate myself after it and I'm tired of myself hating myself. The kitchen is pretty bare, I had planned on going shopping today but I got 3 hours max sleep last night which doesn't help the emotional exhaustion so...

she was not fragile like a flower; she was fragile like a bomb.   I feel like this quote pretty much sums up my life. Particularly at the moment, I've been holding on and I'm so scared I just explode into pink mist and evaporate to nothingness. Yesterday was a shitty day, perhaps it was too much sun (me and the sun, we are not friends) or it was the overload of socializing. Either way I didn't want to do anything, I spent most of the day cuddling with Fysh and...

Crazy lady (as Fysh calls her) won free entrance for her and a bunch of friends to The Fantastic Grifizzi Brothers (an animal free circus) that's in Stellenbosch at the moment and The Person, Fysh and I got to tag along. Ever heard of those gypsy carnivals you hear about that would roll into town, set up on a field, all the staff sleep in tents and caravans and then they pack up one night and are gone? Well they did so great trying to recreate them! And yes, they actually...

If you missed it : Sir Hamilton McFluffykins pulled a Harry Houdini and escaped from his wonderful habitat on Tuesday and we've been searching for the fluffy guy but to no avail. I'd pretty much given up and explained to Fysh that the probability of us finding him was slim to none due to the feral cats we have here that eat everything (yes everything, they even scavenge my fruit and veg!). Well Wednesday night rolled around and here I am heading to the loo before bed (note that...

Fysh is well mannered, he really is as awesome as he sounds here, we never dealt with the terrible two's or the threenager ages and he only ever threw a tantrum in the shop once but eight has brought on a kid I don't know so well. He's still very polite, clever, grateful for even the small things and quirky but in between that I'm seeing things like talking back and the more recent - LYING TO ME! I mean it's small things, like telling me how the food...

This is a more controversial post than I'm generally used to writing and I know there will probably be people who have nasty things to say but it's constantly on my mind so fuck it...

I'm trying to think why we haven't done this one before, you know with the whole unicorns and mermaids obsession in this house and what not. Ooh mermaids will have to be another one hahaha. Unicorns are mythical of course, but that doesn't mean they haven't had a large impact on history. Also don't tell my child they aren't real because he will argue it until you believe him. I'm okay with that. Rather unicorns than bloody Stampylongnose or whatever he's called. Man that guy's voice grates me. Thought I'd...

We're on week two of this whole "being more active" thing and last week showed a few cm's down which is of course a bonus and fantastic motivation to keep at it. It really does help getting a few people in on it with you to help motivate each other. Sometimes we talk more kak than anything else but we always check in and see how the water intake is going, share interesting recipes and keep each other's spirits up when it's been a particularly tough day. Because...

Often Fysh asks about what would happen if there was an apocalypse, be it by zombie or something else thanks to all the dystopian themed movies (also, it probably doesn't help that my paranoid overly prepared stepfather has a garage full of supplies for when if it happens). There are a lot of things that I've learned over the years thanks to either a parent or a stranger that school never taught me but that's come in REALLY handy and has impressed someone / saved my life and would definitely come...

We were playing with a bracelet I got from Jill from JamTarts a few years back, the ends link together with magnets and Fysh was testing their strength. Trying to see through how much paper they would stick, watching them pull towards each other. Then I found one with that pushes the other away and he was fascinated. I think we forget how small things like that are actually really delightful and  interesting and that just playing with them teaches us about physics. That's the one thing I have...

We live not too far away from a school, actually we're about 12 houses away, so there are kids that come past us daily. Fysh was outside playing with the woof and got chatting to some of the kids. One came to visit and they ended up chatting for a while and then watching something on the tablet till I asked G to please go home in case his mother was worried where he is and bring her details so I can let her know next time. Today him...

The Person is the most damn patient and quietly persistent person I have ever met. He's done so many things to help out and for a long time I resisted because "my life is fine stop trying to change it" but here and there I started giving in. And it's funny how things happen like that, you start changing one small thing here and there and the ripple effect is tremendous. I started forcing myself to disconnect and go to bed earlier than usual, whether or not I had...

I have tried growing plants for ages and yet somehow I always end up killing them. Fysh seems good at it though and his little birthday seeds are growing fabulously. Soon we'll have a whole herb garden and spinach and carrots. He wants to try strawberries and tomatoes as well so I'll be getting him seeds next week. Succulents though, these I seem to be able to keep alive and grow pretty well! Probably because they only need to be watered once a week and thrive on sun and...

When Fysh held up a suurtjie for me to nosh on yesterday and asked what they are called in English I honestly had no idea. None whatsoever. Blank page there. We spent summers on the West Coast with my grandparents so I've grown up with suurtjies, picking them and rinsing them off then pulling all the faces as you get that sour taste when you chew on them. They're gorgeous and tasty but what else? They're a weed, I know that. They're the one mom always said it's okay...

Fysh caught a cold or something last week (can I blame socializing at the gym? I guess it's a good thing though) and has had a miff wet cough and he has been waking me up in the evenings with it. I know it's not his fault but holy crap I am exhausted! My whole carefully cultivated work schedule is in sy moer because I simply can't get up and at em at 6am when I've had hardly any sleep in the evening. Which is terrible because I worked...
