GIVEAWAY > The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains.
After the 2nd, only the lucky escape.
And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive.
After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother–or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

This was one of my favourite reads of 2013 and I’m stoked they’ve made it into a movie! To celebrate the film Penguin Random House has released a new “movie tie in” of the 5th Wave (it has a different cover to the one I have).

If you haven’t given it a read yet you really should. It’s absolutely brilliant, such a great take on the usual alien invasion. I could somehow see this one happening. And Cassie is a brilliant, strong and determined character. I haven’t seen the movie yet, not sure why. Maybe cause I’m scared it won’t live up to the book (as with most).

It also happens to be our February BOTM over at the secret book club (come find us on FB and request to be added if you’re seriously into books).

If you don’t own a copy yet and you want one here’s your chance cause I have a copy of it with your name on it! (no it’s not signed, sorry) Just leave a comment letting me know what you’re currently reading :)

** Draw closes Friday the 26th and I’ll email the winner to get their postage details.

Just a little heads up – it has a weird ending cause there’s a book two which you can purchase here > Infinite Sea.
And book three (the last star) is said to publish May this year. FINALLY!

  1. I’ve just started (so am currently reading) “The Husband’s Secret” which is set in Australia (that’s a bit different) and is currently a page turner because I’m eager to see how the three parallel stories relate to each other…

The book I’ve just finished was “My Sister Lives on the Mantlepiece” which was told from the perspective of a 10 year old boy whose entire life has been dominated by the fact that his sister, who he barely remembers, was killed in a terrorist bombing (not 9/11). The main character is very sweet and you feel for him as he navigates a life of new places (they’ve moved), a missing mom (his parents split up), an older sister dealing with her own ghosts (she and the other sister were twins), and an alcoholic dad. Towards the end there’s a scene that had me crying into my cup of tea but I won’t spoil it. I will say that although it’s a bit sad, it still managed to give me the ‘warm and fuzzies’.

    1. Child 44 was a great book. I also found it profoundly frightening the amount of indoctrination people are exposed to, and buy in to.

  2. Currently reading The Widow, by Fiona Barton.
I raced through the first half and have slowed down a bit now towards the end.. I’m hoping it picks up again for a good finish! :)

  3. I’m just about half way through The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. Such an inspiring memoir. The 5th Wave would be the perfect follow up read.

  4. I’m busy rereading Smacked by Melinda Ferguson. I’m having a bit of a hard time at the moment and this helps me keep things in perspective.

  5. I am currently reading Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix by J.K. Rowling, and I’m rereading(my fourth time) The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I’ve been reading the Harry Potter series for two weeks now, and I really want to finish them this month. I’ve already read the first two books when I was 9 years old, but for some reason I haven’t been able to finish the whole series.

5th Wave sounds really interesting too. I’ve been kind of hooked ever since I found out that it was going to have a movie adaptation, but I’ve never really got to read the book. I hope I do through your giveaway :)

  6. I’m in the middle of The Wondrous and the Wicked! Really need to read The 5th Wave before the movie comes out! :o
